State Rep. Ken Borton today released the following statement regarding the ongoing permitting process for the proposed Line 5 tunnel project beneath the Straits of Mackinac. Enbridge is currently seeking a permit from the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), a key step in moving the project forward.

“Line 5 continues to play an important role in delivering affordable and dependable energy to communities across Michigan,” said Borton (R-Gaylord). “As the permitting process moves forward, it is important that residents, workers, local businesses, and families who rely on this energy infrastructure have their voices heard. Public input helps ensure that decision-makers consider the needs of the people and communities most affected by these decisions.”

Last week, EGLE hosted a virtual public meeting that drew participation from more than 200 residents interested in providing feedback on the permit application. Members of the public may continue submitting comments through June 30.

An identical permit application was approved by EGLE in 2021 but ultimately expired after years of delays resulting from legal challenges to the project.Line 5 remains a vital source of energy for Michigan residents, particularly in the Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan.

According to the Michigan Public Service Commission’s 2023-24 Winter Energy Appraisal, approximately 800,000 people rely on propane supplied through Line 5 to heat their homes.

The tunnel project has already received approval from the Michigan Public Service Commission, and a decision from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers is expected in the near future.
