State Rep. Rachelle Smit this week attended a comprehensive leadership summit at the White House in Washington D.C. where she met with Cabinet-level officials within the Trump Administration to discuss key issues facing Michigan and the nation at-large.
“I was honored to attend the White House leadership summit and discuss critical issues facing my rural communities and Michigan as a whole,” said Smit, R-Martin. “Meeting with high-ranking officials allowed me to bring key concerns directly to federal decision-makers. We addressed high energy costs, rampant government overreach, and vulnerabilities in our election system. There is much work to be done, but government functions best when state and federal leaders work in partnership.”
At the White House summit, Smit met with key administration officials like Small Business Administration Administrator Kelly Loeffler, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, and Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
Smit also attended a hearing of the U.S. House Committee on House Administration, which oversees federal elections. Smit, who chairs the Election Integrity Committee in the Michigan House, was there to support her colleague, state Rep. Ann Bollin, who testified in favor of reforms included in the Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) Act. The measure would establish nationwide baseline standards for federal elections, including voter ID requirements, citizenship verification for registration, and routine voter list maintenance.
“Maintaining election security remains my top priority,” Smit said. “I was glad to attend the hearing to support Rep. Bollin’s testimony on the MEGA Act. I hope to help craft and introduce similar legislation at the state level so we can continue working closely with our federal partners on election security.”
Smit also joined other Michigan lawmakers in presenting White House officials with a state House Resolution in support of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE) Act, which is currently under congressional consideration.
