State Rep. John Roth this week voted to advance an affordability plan aimed at easing financial pressures on Michigan residents.

“People across this state are working hard, but too many feel like they’re falling behind as everyday expenses keep climbing,” said Roth (R-Interlochen). “Michigan families deserve policies that provide financial breathing room. These bills are focused on helping people keep more money in their pockets and making our state more affordable for the long term.”

House Bills 5872-5879 include several proposals that will reduce costs for homeowners and taxpayers statewide. The package would eliminate the state property tax, providing an estimated average savings of $900 per year for Michigan families. The legislation also rolls back utility rates to help lower monthly bills and removes the state’s real estate transfer tax, cutting costs associated with buying and selling homes.

Roth said the proposals reflect the efforts of House Republicans to help families stay rooted in their communities.

“Too many people up north are being priced out of opportunities that should be attainable, including homeownership,” Roth said. “We need to focus on creating an environment where people want to stay, build careers, and raise the next generation. Our plan takes meaningful steps toward lowering costs and strengthening our state’s future. This will bring the Senate to the table to begin negotiations on making the cost of living in Northern Michigan more affordable.”
