State Representative Cam Cavitt proudly announced that Alpena Community College has secured a state grant for an innovative solar project planned for the school’s campus.

ACC successfully bid for a $4.6 million grant from the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC). Cavitt, R-Cheboygan, celebrated the achievement, which he said demonstrates the power of local initiative and hard work in bringing state dollars back to the region.

“I couldn’t be prouder of Alpena Community College for leading the way and securing this investment for our community,” said Cavitt, R-Cheboygan. “Despite Gov. Whitmer’s routine neglect of our region, this victory proves that with hard work, persistence, and collaboration, we can still ensure that state funding flows into Northeast Michigan to benefit our schools, our economy, and our future.”

ACC’s $4.6 million grant will be used to build a 6-acre (1.8 MW) solar array on its main campus, along with a solar learning laboratory. The college’s “Farming the Sun” project will generate energy and provide enhanced learning experiences for students. The initiative is designed to position the college as a leader in education and workforce development, ensuring electrical systems students are thoroughly trained for high-paying careers in competitive industries.

“This is about more than just funding. It’s about ensuring that our students have the tools and opportunities they need to succeed in today’s rapidly changing economy,” Cavitt continued. “Alpena Community College is making sure our students can get the education they need to land high-paying jobs right here at home, and I was happy to support this application to help secure these state dollars for our region.”

Rep. Cavitt also applauded the leadership of Alpena Community College, particularly President Don MacMaster and the college’s board, for their vision and dedication to expanding opportunities for local students and the community.

“Dr. Don MacMaster and his team have done an incredible job keeping ACC at the forefront of education and workforce development in Michigan,” said Cavitt. “Their commitment to excellence is what helped make this project a reality, and it’s exactly the kind of leadership we need to continue pushing Northeast Michigan forward.”

With this significant funding, Alpena Community College will further position itself as a hub of innovation and opportunity, proving that, even in the face of political challenges, the people of Northeast Michigan can still win big for their community.
