State Rep. Cam Cavitt on Tuesday joined his hometown of Cheboygan in celebrating the announcement of a $279,000 grant to rehabilitate a two-story building in the city’s downtown. The grant, awarded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, is part of an ongoing Revitalization and Placemaking (RAP) granting program.

“Cheboygan’s downtown has always been the heartbeat of our community, and this RAP grant is an exciting opportunity to breathe new life into it,” said Cavitt, R-Cheboygan. “The revitalization of the building will not only enhance our local business scene but also create new housing, making our city more vibrant and welcoming. Projects like this are a testament to the strength and potential of Cheboygan, and I’m thrilled to see this investment in our community.”

The project is expected to generate a total capital investment of $624,533. The building will feature a new ADA-compliant restroom, retail space on the first floor, and two apartment units on the second floor.

The RAP program is available to communities seeking to revitalize vacant, underutilized, blighted, and historic structures and the development of permanent place-based infrastructure associated with traditional downtowns, social zones, outdoor dining, and placed-based public spaces.
