House Republican Leader Matt Hall, R-Richland Township, speaks against House Bills 4556-4560 at a news conference with crime victims and fellow legislators on Thursday, May 25.
Victims speak out against horrifying proposal to release violent prisoners
House Republican Leader Matt Hall joined crime victims on Thursday and lambasted egregious new legislation spearheaded by leading House Democrats that could let murderers, rapists, domestic abusers, and other dangerous criminals out of prison early.
House Bills 4556-4560, introduced last week by Rep. Kara Hope — the chair of the Criminal Justice Committee — and other key Democrat leaders, would allow almost all criminals in Michigan prisons to request a reduced sentence after only 10 years in prison. Hall criticized the bills, which would let even serial killers and other murderers sentenced to life without the possibility of parole to have their remaining sentences reduced or eliminated.
“Michiganders want public safety in our communities, but House Democrats are pushing radical, unprecedented plans to let dangerous criminals roam our neighborhoods,” said Hall, R-Richland Township. “The Democrats’ newest, extreme proposal could release the most brutal murderers and rapists from prison and inject them back into our communities. This horrifying legislation disregards victims and obliterates the safety that the people of Michigan deserve.”
Under the bills, more than 17,000 dangerous criminals in Michigan would be eligible to request a lower sentence in the future, including more than 5,100 murderers, 1,700 criminal sexual offenders, and 1,000 armed robbers who would be immediately eligible for resentencing. The bills would make it difficult for victims and law enforcement to prevent a violent criminal from getting a reduced sentence and returning to the streets to put victims and other Michigan residents at risk.
Even Jason Dalton, the Kalamazoo Uber shooter who does not meet the legislation’s narrow “mass shooting” exception, could have his life sentence reduced after only 10 years.
“Gov. Whitmer’s heavily-skewed, partisan commission is nothing but a Trojan horse for new taxes,” Hall said. “After four years of failure, the governor has no plan to keep young people in Michigan, no excuse for our crumbling roads, and no vision to improve childhood reading levels.”
“House Democrats’ wasteful spending ignores the priorities of the people of Michigan, shoveling taxpayer dollars to unsustainable new programs, pork, and partisan pet projects instead of investing critical resources into education, infrastructure, and local law enforcement,” Hall said.
“Michiganders deserve a thorough, transparent review of projects before their tax dollars are spent, and my plan will add new voices to the table to help protect Michigan taxpayers and use resources wisely,” Hall said.
