State Rep. Doug Wozniak today voted in support of legislation that would help expand access to dental care by making it easier for dentists and dental hygienists licensed in other states to practice in Michigan.

House Bill 4935 would enter Michigan into the interstate Dental Compact, allowing qualified dental professionals to more easily work across state lines through an expedited licensing process.

Wozniak said the legislation is a practical step toward addressing ongoing shortages in dental care providers and reducing wait times for patients.

“Too many people across Michigan struggle to get timely dental care because there simply are not enough providers available,” said Wozniak (R-Shelby Township). “This plan helps open the door for more qualified professionals to practice here and helps patients get the care they need sooner.”

Most Michigan counties are currently designated as dental health care shortage areas, with many patients facing wait times of several weeks or even months for appointments.

Wozniak said the compact would help modernize the licensing process while maintaining professional standards.

“This is about removing unnecessary barriers while still protecting patients and maintaining high standards of care,” Wozniak said. “If qualified dental professionals are already licensed and practicing in another state, we should not make it harder than necessary for them to help serve Michigan residents.”

The legislation now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
