RELEASE|July 30, 2021

State Rep. Mary Whiteford, of Casco Township, has been awarded the School Mental Health Champion Award from the School-Community Health Alliance of Michigan.

The School-Community Health Alliance of Michigan is a collaboration of individuals and organizations that represent and support school-based and school-linked health centers and programs.

Whiteford received the award at Renaissance High School Alternative Education in Plainwell.

“It’s an honor to accept this award,” Whiteford said. “Schools are a great place for students to get support and help. There is certainly more to be done, but I’m proud of the progress my colleagues and I have made in making student mental health care more accessible during my time in office. I look forward to continuing to adopt further improvements.”

As vice chair of the House Appropriations Committee and chair of the Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, Whiteford prioritized state dollars for the expansion of mental health programs in Michigan public schools. Further, Whiteford has supported adding more school-based health clinics that include behavioral health services throughout the state as they have proven to be crucial for Michigan children.
