Rep. Tisdel: Growing electric vehicle market needs fair charging system

State Rep. Mark Tisdel and the Michigan House of Representatives today approved a plan to protect electric vehicle drivers from unfair business practices for charging services.

The plan was a priority for state Rep. Andrea Schroeder during her three years in the House. She passed away earlier this month.

“Andrea Schroeder’s time in the House was cut short, and we all miss her dearly,” said Tisdel, of Rochester Hills. “Approving the good public policy she advocated is a fitting tribute to her legacy of people-focused service.”

Schroeder’s House Bill 4801 would require a business providing electric vehicle charging services to register with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD). This registration framework will enable MDARD to protect consumers. Businesses would be required to clearly display the cost of charging at each station.

“As more and more Michigan drivers are purchasing electric vehicles for their families, the market is continuing to grow,” Tisdel said. “Of course, vehicles can’t get anywhere without power, and this plan will ensure businesses that operate charging stations treat this growing customer base fairly.”

HB 4801 now advances to the Senate for consideration.
